AI & LLMs applied to law Term #03 / 50

Claude (Anthropic)

Claude is an AI model developed by Anthropic, a company founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers. It stands out for its "Constitutional AI" approach aligned with ethical principles and its 200,000-token context window. On the Team and Enterprise plans, Anthropic does not train its models on your content by default; on the individual plans (Free, Pro, Max), training stays on until the user turns it off.

Claude is Anthropic's flagship model. Anthropic is a US company founded in 2021 by Dario and Daniela Amodei, former OpenAI executives. What sets it apart is its Constitutional AI approach: the model is trained against explicit ethical principles, which makes it particularly well suited to regulated professions such as law. With a 200,000-token context window, Claude can process long legal documents in a single request.

For legal professionals, the choice of plan matters: on the Team and Enterprise plans, Anthropic does not train its models on your content by default, whereas on the individual plans (Free, Pro, Max) training stays on until the user turns it off. This is critical for protecting legal professional privilege (under French law, article 66-5 of the Act of 31 December 1971): a firm handling sensitive information chooses a business plan and pseudonymizes its documents before sending anything.

Claude is especially strong at analyzing long documents, producing structured summaries and reasoning with nuance, all essential skills in legal work. Its API integration lets legaltech vendors build custom solutions that combine the model's power with verified legal sources through RAG architectures.
